Sphaerozoum was named by Meyen (1834) [Sepkoski's age data: T Plio R]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Sphaerozoidae.

It was assigned to Sphaerozoidae by De Wever et al. (2001); and to Spumellaria by Sepkoski (2002).
