Cancer (Cancer) tomowoi was named by Karasawa (1990). Its type specimen is MFM9022 and is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Higashihora, which is in a Miocene marine horizon in the Akeyo Formation of Japan.
It was recombined as Cancer tomowoi by Schweitzer et al. (2010).
