Mimomys sawrockensis

Osteichthyes - Rodentia - Cricetidae

Taxonomy
Ogmodontomys sawrockensis was named by Hibbard (1957) [used without justification by Chaline et al. 1999]. It is not extant. Its type specimen is UMMP 28166, a partial skull (Part of palatal region with M1 preserved). Its type locality is Saw Rock Canyon (Lower), which is in a Blancan terrestrial horizon in the Rexroad Formation of Kansas.

It was recombined as Mimomys sawrockensis by Repenning (1987), Mou (1997), Repenning (2003).

Diagnosis
ReferenceDiagnosis
R. J. Zakrzewski 1967Slightly smaller than Ogmodontomys poaphagus with shorter crowned teeth. The lateral palatal grooves are distinctly deeper than those of O. poaphagus.
L. D. Martin 1975Smaller and lower crowned teeth than in Ogmodontomys poaphagus, also differing from that species in having steep vertical walls to the palate, deeper palatal grooves, and lacking development of dentine tracts.
E. P. Gustafson 1978 (Ophiomys mcknighti)Similar in size to 0. magilli Hibbard (1972), larger than O. taylori (Hibbard, 1959) , but smaller than Ogmodontomys poaphagus Hibbard (1941), and Cosomys Wilson (1932). Molars rooted, lacking cement, lacking dentine tracts. M1 with three alternating triangles. Base of enamel on anterior loop of M1 near same level as on labial alternating triangles, not retracted upwards as in 0. magilli or 0. taylori. Apices of reentrant angles on lingual side of M1 ( except second) at right angles to the longi- tudinal plane of the tooth in young individuals, some_ times constricted and turned anterad in older indi- viduals but with less constriction than in 0. magilli. Enamel pit on anterior loop present in type M1 ; anterolabial margin of anterior loop rounded, some times possessing multiple grooves in early wear. M1 and M2 with three roots, other molars with two.
R. A. Martin et al. 2002Slightly smaller than Ogmodontomys poaphagus Hibbard with shorter crowned teeth. The lateral palatal grooves are distinctly deepr than thos of O. poaphagus.
C. A. Repenning 2003A species of Mimomys with lower dentine tracts than any other North American species of Mimomys. First lower molar with a large and persistent islet on the ACC of populations from the WFR, but small and shallow in the type material from Kansas, and a well-developed MK. Dentine tracts are stronger than in west Asian Mi- momys antiquus, about the same as in Mac- edonian Mimomys davakosi, and less devel- oped than in European Mimomys (Cseria) gracilis (see fig. 17.2D, E, fig. 17.3, fig. 17.4B, D). Size, as determined by the length of the first lower molar, is greatly variable in western populations of Mimomys sawrock- ensis, but comparable to that of the similar species from Paratethyian FR of Europe (Mi- momys davakosi, van de Weerd, 1979).
