Cornutella scalaris was named by Ehrenberg (1874). It is extant. It is the type species of Sethopyramis, Sestropyramis.
It was recombined as Sestropyramis scalaris by Campbell (1954); it was recombined as Sethopyramis scalaris by Petrushevskaya and Kozlova (1972), Suzuki (2009).
