Paleopsopheticus shujenae was named by Hu and Tao (1996). It is the type species of Paleopsopheticus.
It was recombined as Psopheticus shujenae by Schweitzer et al. (2010); it was misspelled as Paleopsopheticus shugenae by Schweitzer et al. (2022).
