Taxonomy
Eolipotes japonicus was named by Kimura and Hasegawa (2024) [ZooBank Id: DE9D09AC- 3F26-4C91-9AD3-74FA4B02BFBE]. Its type specimen is TPM7847-1, a partial skull (cranium was found with sev- eral skeletal elements, including tympanic bullae, isolated teeth and fragments of postcranial bones,), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Utsunomiya, which is in a Tortonian marine horizon in the Ogane Formation of Japan. It is the type species of Eolipotes.

Hasegawa 2024 | Eolipotes differs from other Lipotidae, Lipotes and Parapontoporia, by having the posterior extremity of the premaxilla directly contacting the antero- lateral angle of the nasal, and anteroposteriorly shorter pterygoid sinus fossa, whose anterior extremity is not anteriorly extended beyond the level of the antorbital notch, lower maxillary crest posterolateral to the maxil- lary eminence, and broader anterior incisure of periotic; further differs from Lipotes by having anteroposteriorly elongated frontal in cranial vertex, and by lacking salient anteroposterior ridges on the dorsal surface of anterior process of periotic. |
