Ardenna buchananbrowni was named by Tennyson et al. (2024). Its type specimen is NMNZ S.49931, a partial skeleton, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Ohawe Beach, Waipipian, which is in a Waipipian marine horizon in New Zealand.
