Taxonomy
Morotherium leptonyx was named by Marsh (1874).

It was recombined as Megalonyx leptonyx by Gazin (1935); it was considered a nomen dubium by Hirschfeld and Webb (1968); it was synonymized subjectively with Megalonyx leptostomus by Kurten and Anderson (1980), McDonald and Naples (2007).
