Cheirurus gibbus was named by Beyrich (1845).

It was recombined as Crotalocephalina gibba by Kröger (2008); it was recombined as Cheirurus (Crotalocephalina) gibbus by Johnson and Fortey (2012); it was recombined as Crotalocephalina gibbus by Bault et al. (2021).
