Cheirurus pauper was named by Barrande (1852).

It was recombined as Mezocrotalus pauper by Maksimova (1978); it was recombined as Cheirurus (Pilletopeltis) pauper by Alberti (1983); it was recombined as Crotalocephalina pauper by Jell (2003); it was recombined as Crotalocephalus pauper by Lemke (2020).
