Phacops liopyga was named by Richter (1863).

It was recombined as Phacopidella liopyga by Richter and Richter (1926); it was recombined as Phacopidella (Dienstina) liopyga by Pfeiffer (1959); it was recombined as Phacopidella liopyge by Feist and Cronier (2011); it was recombined as Girardina liopyga by Feist and Klapper (2022).
