Schizocytheridae was named by Howe (1961). It is extant. Its type is Schizocythere.

It was reranked as the subfamily Schizocytherinae by Liebau (2005).

It was assigned to Cytheracea by Benson et al. (1961), Bertels (1975); and to Cytheridae by Liebau (2005).
