Elasmodontomys was named by Anthony (1916). Its type is Elasmodontomys obliquus.
It was assigned to Chinchilloidea by Marivaux et al. (2020); to Echimyidae by Woods et al. (2021); and to Heptaxodontidae by Marivaux et al. (2022).
