Taxonomy
Hupeolenus was named by Geyer (1990) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm Tojo-u Sepkoski's reference number: 928]. It is not extant. Its type is Protolenus (Hupeolenus) hupei.

It was reranked as Protolenus (Hupeolenus) by El Albani et al. (2024).

It was assigned to Ellipsocephalidae by Jell and Adrain (2002); to Redlichiida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Protolenus by El Albani et al. (2024).
