Pakudyptes hakataramea
Taxonomy
Pakudyptes hakataramea was named by Ando et al. (2024). Its type specimen is OU 21977, a limb element (nearly complete left humerus), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Hakataramea Quarry, which is in an Oligocene marine limestone in the Otekaike Limestone Formation of New Zealand.

T. Ando et al. 2024 | Pakudyptes is smaller than all other previously described penguin taxa except Eudyptula and Eretiscus. It differs from those penguins in having the following characters: bipartition of tricipital fossa is incomplete, shaft of humerus is narrow and straight with craniocaudally thick proximal portion, insertion scar for m. supracoracoideus is short and running parallel to the long axis of humerus, olecranon of ulna is round and tab-like. |
