Chimaerotheca reperere was named by Gottfried and Fordyce (2015). Its type specimen is OU 22689 and is a trace fossil. Its type locality is JDC 343, Dipton Stream (E44/f8631), which is in an Otapirian marine siliciclastic in New Zealand.
