Pantolestes metsiacus was named by Cope (1882).
It was recombined as Trigonolestes metsiacus by Matthew (1899) and Hay (1902); it was synonymized subjectively with Diacodexis chacensis by Sinclair (1914); it was recombined as Diacodexis metsiacus by McKenna (1960), Guthrie (1967), Delson (1971), Rose (1982) and Krishtalka and Stucky (1985).
