Taxonomy
Patriofelis leidyanus was named by Osborn and Wortman (1892). It is the type species of Aelurotherium.

It was recombined as Aelurotherium leidyanum by Adams (1896) and Matthew (1899); it was synonymized subjectively with Aelurotherium latidens by Wortman (1901); it was recombined as Aelurotherium leidyana by Hay (1902); it was synonymized subjectively with Patriofelis ferox by Matthew (1909), Denison (1938), Gazin (1957) and Gunnell (1998).
