Taxonomy
Ammonites nera was named by Forbes (1846). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Pondicherry, which is in a Maastrichtian marine sandstone/claystone in the Valudavur Formation of India.

It was recombined as Phylloceras nera by Paulcke (1907), Marshall (1926); it was recombined as Neophylloceras nera by Matsumoto (1984); it was recombined as Phylloceras (Neophylloceras) nera by Kennedy and Henderson (1992); it was recombined as Hypophylloceras (Neophylloceras) nera by Shigeta and Maeda (2005).
