Musculus leucopus was named by Rafinesque (1818). It is extant.

It was recombined as Peromyscus leucopus by Hay (1902), Wilson (1967), Dalquest and Roth (1970), Kurten and Anderson (1980), Dalquest and Schultz (1992).
