Scala (Sthenorytis) stearnsii was named by Dall (1892). Its type specimen is USNM 106904 and is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Epitonium (Sthenorytis) stearnsii by Durham (1937); it was recombined as Sthenorytis stearnsii by DuShane (1979).
