C. R. Scherer and C. Voiculescu-Holvad 2024 | Teratophoneins can be distinguished from other tyrannosaurines on the basis of the following combination of synapomorphies (those marked with ‘*’ denote characters with states assessed for all included taxa): Ventral margin of maxillary fenestra strongly anterodorsally inclined (C387; Voris et al., 2020), rostrocaudally narrow subcutaneous surface anterior to promaxillary fenestra (C388; Voris et al., 2020), maxilla alveoli count <13 (11 in Teratophoneus and Lythronax [C261; Carr et al., 2011; Loewen et al., 2013]), presence of thick rugose ornamentation on lateral surface of jugal (C104; Carr et al., 2017), long prefrontolacrimal process of the frontal, terminating anterior to termination of the prefrontonasal process (C153; Voris et al., 2020)*. Note that this list of synapomorphies is not exhaustive as there are many which are shared between Teratophoneus and Lythronax, where the state cannot be assessed for Dynamoterror. |
