Plioceros floblairi was named by Frick (1937). Its type locality is Deep Creek Quarry No. 1, which is in a Barstovian terrestrial horizon in the Valentine Formation of Nebraska.
It was recombined as Sphenophalos floblairi by Stirton (1938), Webb (1969), Voorhies (1990).
