Pholas cuneata was named by Meek and Hayden (1858).

It was recombined as Pholas (Martesia) cuneata by Meek and Hayden (1860); it was recombined as Martesia cuneata by Meek (1876); it was recombined as Opertochasma cuneatum by Stephenson (1952), Speden (1970).
