Proantilocapra platycornea was named by Barbour and Schultz (1934) [genotype]. Its type locality is Proantilocapra Locality, which is in a Clarendonian terrestrial horizon in the Ash Hollow Formation of Nebraska. It is the type species of Proantilocapra.
