Taxonomy
Sciurus (Prosciurus) vetustus was named by Matthew (1903). Its type specimen is AMNH 9626, a maxilla (an upper jaw with complete unworn dentition), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Pipestone Springs, which is in a Chadronian terrestrial claystone in the Renova Formation of Montana. 
It was recombined as Prosciurus vetustus by Matthew (1910).
