Taxonomy
Prosthecion major was named by Patterson and West (1973) [genotype]. Its type locality is Hell's Half Acre (Lower), which is in a Clarkforkian terrestrial horizon in the DeBeque Formation of Colorado. It is the type species of Prosthecion.
It was recombined as Ectocion major by Thewissen (1990).
