Taxonomy
Protictis aprophatos was named by Flynn and Galiano (1982). Its type locality is Tepee Trail Bone Bed A, which is in an Uintan terrestrial horizon in the Tepee Trail Formation of Wyoming.
It was recombined as Protictoides aprophatos by Gingerich and Winkler (1985).
