Asymmetricythere tertia was named by Carbonnel and Johnson (1989). Its type specimen is FSL 136124/2, a carapace, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Well BR 13, 76 m depth, which is in an Eocene/Eocene carbonate limestone in Guinea-Bissau.
