Jaywilsonomys pintoensis was named by Ferrusquia and Wood (1969). Its type locality is Rancho Gaitan, which is in a Chadronian terrestrial horizon in the Preitos Formation of Mexico.
It was recombined as Pseudocylindrodon pintoensis by Ferrusquía-Villafranca (1984).
