Squalus argentinensis

Taxonomy
Protosqualus argentinensis was named by Bogan et al. (2016). Its type specimen is MPM 10023, a tooth (anterolateral tooth), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is El Calafate airport, which is in a Maastrichtian transition zone/lower shoreface sandstone/conglomerate in the Calafate Formation of Argentina.

It was recombined as Squalus argentinensis by Cappetta et al. (2019).

Bogan et al. 2016Very large Protosqualus that is distinguished from remaining species of the genus on the basis of the following combination of characters (autapomorphies marked by an asterisk*): (1) mesial heel with an irregularly denticulated cutting edge* (Fig. 4), (2) mesiodistally wide uvula with its distal end acute and subvertically oriented*, (3) lingually extended uvula, and (4) apicobasally deep tooth root.
