Taxonomy
Pleurocyon medius was named by Peterson (1919). Its type specimen is A.M.N.H. No. 1969, a mandible (fragment of a lower jaw with M1 in place), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is White River Pocket, which is in an Uintan terrestrial horizon in the Uinta Formation of Utah.
It was recombined as Petersonella media by Kraglievich (1948); it was recombined as Simidectes medius by Coombs (1971), Gustafson (1979).
