Raja cavernosa was named by Probst (1877).

It was recombined as Dasyatis cavernosa by Antunes et al. (1981), Cappetta (1987), Laurito and Valerio (2008), Brisswalter (2009), Cicimurri and Knight (2009), Mas (2010); it was recombined as Taeniura cavernosa by Vialle et al. (2011); it was recombined as Taeniurops cavernosus by Reinecke and Radwanski (2015), VillafaƱa et al. (2020), Cicimurri et al. (2022); it was recombined as Taeniurops cavernosa by Landau et al. (2025).
