Taxonomy
Spermophilus elegans was named by Kennicott (1863). It is extant.

It was synonymized subjectively with Spermophilus richardsonii by Bailey (1893), Hall (1981); it was recombined as Citellus elegans by Howell (1928), Hibbard (1937) and Davis (1939); it was recombined as Urocitellus elegans by Helgen et al. (2009).
