Taxonomy
Carcharodon chubutensis was named by Ameghino (1901). It is not a trace fossil.
It was synonymized subjectively with Carcharodon megalodon by Chapman and Cudmore (1924); it was synonymized subjectively with Carcharias subauriculatus by Marsili et al. (2007); it was recombined as Megaselachus chubutensis by Cook et al. (2010); it was recombined as Carcharocles chubutensis by Aguilera et al. (2017); it was recombined as Otodus chubutensis by Maisch et al. (2020), Goedert et al. (2025).
