Oxyrhina praecursor americana was named by Leriche (1942). It is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Isurus praecursor americana by White (1956); it was recombined as Isurus praecursor americanus by Thurmond and Jones (1981); it was recombined as Macrorhizodus americanus by Zhelezko and Kozlov (1999).
