Bayshinoryctes shuvalovi

Taxonomy
Bayshinoryctes shuvalovi was named by Lopatin and Averianov (2023). Its type specimen is PIN 5896/1, a partial skull, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Bayshin-Tsav [SMPE] (PIN coll. 100), which is in a Turonian/Santonian terrestrial horizon in the Baynshire Formation of Mongolia. It is the type species of Bayshinoryctes.

Averianov 2023Similar to Maelestes and differs from all other known Cretaceous eutherians by the following combination of characters: P5 metacone absent, M1 metacone much smaller than the paracone, M1 constricted at conular region, M1 pre- and postcingulum present, lower canine large, procumbent and single-rooted, p1 single-rooted, p2 semiprocumbent, p3 smaller than p2 and p4, small cingular mesial accessory cusps on p4 and p5, lower molars with trigonid distinctly higher than talonid, paraconid low, metaconid and protoconid similar in height, talonid subequal to trigonid in width, and m3 talonid long and narrow. Differs from Maelestes by three-rooted P4, P4 metastyle and protocone larger, P4 labial margin straight to concave, P5 with deep ectoflexus, double-rooted p3, and p5 with metaconid swelling.
