Pseudocylindrodon medius was named by Burke (1938). Its type locality is McCarty's Mountain, which is in a Chadronian wet floodplain tuff in the Chadron Formation of Montana.
It was recombined as Dolocylindrodon medius by Korth and Tabrum (2016).
