Taxonomy
Geomys townsendii was named by Bachman (1839). It is extant.

It was recombined as Thomomys townsendii by Thaeler (1968), Kurten and Anderson (1980), Patton et al. (1984), Patton and Smith (1989), Rogers (1991), Wilson and Reeder (1993); it was synonymized subjectively with Thomomys umbrinus by Hall (1981); it was recombined as Megascapheus townsendii by Álvarez-Castañeda and Segura-Trujillo (2025).
