Palaeotherium proutii was named by Leidy (1850). It is the type species of Titanotherium.
It was recombined as Titanotherium proutii by Leidy (1852), Leidy (1853), Leidy (1856), Leidy (1857), Hay (1902); it was recombined as Menodus proutii by Cope (1886), Cope (1889), Cope (1891), Osborn (1929); it was considered a nomen dubium by Mader (1989), Mader (1998).
