Protictis laytoni was named by Gingerich and Winkler (1985). Its type locality is Princeton Quarry, which is in a Tiffanian terrestrial horizon in the Fort Union Formation of Wyoming.
It was recombined as Viverravus laytoni by Polly (1997).
