Taxonomy

Hoplosaurus was named by Seeley (1881).

It was synonymized subjectively with Pelorosaurus by Romer (1956), Romer (1966), Steel (1970).

It was assigned to Dinosauria by Seeley (1881); to Scelidosauria by Sauvage (1882); to Ceratopsia by Zittel (1890); to Atlantosauridae by Lydekker (1895); to Sauropoda by Marsh (1896); to Omosauridae by Huene (1909); to Stegosauridae by Nopcsa (1901), von Zittel (1911); to Nodosauridae by Hennig (1915); and to Acanthopholididae by Kuhn (1964).
