Emydinae was named by Rafinesque (1815). It is extant. Its type is Emys. It was considered monophyletic by Bickham (1975).
It was reranked as the tribe Emydinae by Perrier (1928).
It was assigned to Trionychidae by Lydekker (1889); to Testudinidae by Perrier (1928), Estes (1964), Estes and Tihen (1964), Kuhn (1966), Melentis (1966), Estes and Berberian (1970); and to Emydidae by Bickham (1975), Ernst and Barbour (1989), Holman (2002), van Dijk et al. (2014), Bourque (2016).
