Taxonomy
Proictinia was named by Shufeldt (1915) [also attributed to Shufeldt 1913]. Its type is Proictinia gilmorei.

It was assigned to Falconidae by Lambrecht (1933); to Accipitridae by Brodkorb (1956); and to Milvinae by Hay (1930), Wetmore (1940), Wetmore (1956).
