Ophiopholis was named by Müller and Troschel (1840). It is extant. It is the type genus of Ophiopholidae.
It was assigned to Ophiactininae by Matsumoto (1915); to Ophiactidae by Spencer and Wright (1966); and to Ophiopholidae by O'Hara et al. (2018).
