Ophiomyxa was named by Müller and Troschel (1842). It is extant. It is the type genus of Ophiomyxidae.
It was assigned to Ophiomyxinae by Matsumoto (1915), Spencer and Wright (1966); and to Ophiomyxidae by Ljungman (1867), Jagt (2000), Storc and Zitt (2008), O'Hara et al. (2018).
