Taxonomy
Deinogalerix koenigswaldi was named by Freudenthal (1972). It is not extant. Its type specimen is RGM 177777-177884, a skeleton (Larger part of skeleton incl. skull). Its type locality is San Giovannino, which is in a Vallesian/Turolian fissure fill horizon in Italy.

Diagnosis

M. Freudenthal 1972Galericine of gigantic proportions, with diastems between the premolars. The frontal part of the skull is much elongated, the skull itself very long in comparison to the body. Deinogalerix koenigswaldi is the type species. Skull length over 20 cm.
P. M. Butler 1980The largest species of the genus: in the holotype P3-M3=45 mm, M1 measures 10.0 x 12.7 mm, and p3-m3 = 53 mm. Face anterior to P3 and symphyseal part of mandible markedly lengthened; teeth between the canines and third premolars widely spaced; angular process enlarged at its distal end due to the deposition of bone on its ventral surface, and projecting laterally, markedly out of plane from the rest of the jaw.
