Kankakeea was named by Pfefferkorn (1973) [Lesquereux (1870) had orinally named the genus Hymenophyllities, however he applied this name to several totally unrelated fossils. Hymenophllities has been used by other authors for fructifications that have similarities to the extant genus Hymenophyllum.
Hymenophylum describes delicate fronds that have little similarity to the structures dealt with in this paper. ]. Its type is Kankakeea grundyi.
