Peyssonneliaceae was named by Denizot (1968). It is extant. Its type is Peyssonnelia.

It was assigned to Cryptonemiales by James et al. (1988), Rasser (1994), Bassi (1998), Bassi (1998) and Mirsa et al. (2002); to Gigartinales by Schneider and Wynne (2007); and to Corallinales by Kundal (2010).
