Giganotosaurus carolinii
Taxonomy
Giganotosaurus carolinii was named by Coria and Salgado (1995). Its type specimen is MUCPv-CH 1, a partial skeleton (femur), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Villa El Chocón, 15 km south, which is in a Cenomanian terrestrial horizon in the Candeleros Formation of Argentina.

Salgado 1995 | G. carolinii has the following characters: dorsoventrally wide main body of the maxilla, with subparallel dorsal and ventral edges; eave-like supraorbital lacrimal-postorbital contact (preliminarily considered convergent with Abelisaurus); two pneumatic foramina in the internal side of the quadrate; symphysial end of the dentary dorsoventrally expanded, bearing a ventral process; proximal end of the scapula forwardly projected above the coracoid; tubercle-like insertion for triceps in the ventral border of the scapula; lobule-shaped obturator process of the ischium; dorsally projected femoral head; and posterior intercondylar groove in the proximal end of the tibia. | |
